Forum 1:  "The Essence of Kata"

There are 4 stages of kata:

    1. Student learns the moves.
    2. The moves are presentable, but lack focus and perfection.
    3. The kata has focus with power and proper speed.  The kata becomes instinct as the student doesn't have to think about what move comes next.
    4. This stage shows complete understanding, mentally and physically.  The inner strength is portrayed by the student.  Superb muscular control is demonstrated, and spiritual effectiveness and understanding of every move is shown throughout.

Some additional training aids are as follows:
Use a mirror for comparison.  To increase power, use ankle and wrist weights.  Time your breathing and practice enough to get in shape, so that you're not tired at the end of your kata demonstration.  You should exercise your mind as much as your body, by constantly visualizing an opponent.  Every move means something - make sure you understand each.  If you don't, ask your instructor.
